Well, it’s never so simple, right?
Of course you will have to use them, but you need to use them wisely, whether you pay money for them or are limited to the free gems. Both are good reasons not to waste them.

Ally Contributions.
You do contribute 6 times more with one adv. alliance charter than with 200 gems!
Feasting
Except for hosting your own feast. You get and give 10 times more with one feast invitation than with 100 gems!
What to do with all that saved gems?
Unlock castles
Unlock the right castles with your gems. This is a one time invest that pays of very quickly! Just stop doing Feasts and Contributions with gems and save what you need.
You should first unlock the last castle, as it is the one giving you Adv. Alliance Charters, Council Tokens and Feast Invitations so you don’t need gems for this stuff anymore.
Upgrade Traing Grounds
Upgrade at least to 5 dummys to get one-tap ability. More is better, but expensive, so only do it after you did the rest of gem-upgrading
Upgrade Childrens Chambers
Upgrade it at least to 5 Children, so you get one-tap ability
